Sarang Cookery: Sharing the Joy of Traditional Kuih-Making with Kids on TV9

Writer: Lili LeongLili Leong

At Sarang Cookery, we believe that food is more than just nourishment—it’s a bridge to our heritage, a symbol of togetherness, and a way to keep traditions alive. We were honored to host a special Traditional Kuih-Making Class as part of TV9’s Jaguh Kartun program, a heartwarming initiative aimed at introducing children to Malaysia’s rich culinary heritage.

Led by our very own Chef Li Li, this interactive and fun-filled session brought together young aspiring chefs and their mothers, immersing them in the time-honored art of kuih-making. Held in conjunction with the Hari Kebangsaan and Hari Malaysia 2023 campaign by Media Prima Berhad, this event celebrated the theme Manis Pahit Bersama—a reflection of the sweet and bittersweet journey of preserving our traditions.

Keeping Tradition Alive

As times change and modern lifestyles take over, many traditional kuih recipes are at risk of being forgotten. Hard-to-find ingredients, intricate techniques, and time-consuming preparation have contributed to the decline of these treasured treats in everyday kitchens.

That’s why Chef Li Li is so passionate about passing down the art of kuih-making to the next generation. With years of experience mastering Malay, Chinese, and Peranakan cuisine, she guided the young participants step-by-step, sharing not only the techniques but also the stories and cultural significance behind each kuih. It was a meaningful way to connect children with their roots and encourage them to appreciate the beauty of Malaysia’s diverse food culture.

A Fun and Educational Experience

The atmosphere at Sarang Cookery was filled with laughter, excitement, and the irresistible aroma of freshly made kuih. From kneading and shaping dough to wrapping and steaming, the children eagerly took part in every step, their small hands working with enthusiasm as they recreated these beloved traditional snacks.

But it wasn’t just about cooking—it was about creating lasting memories with their mothers, sharing moments of joy, and understanding the patience and love that go into making authentic kuih. The experience was both educational and heartwarming, offering families a chance to bond while celebrating Malaysia’s unique food traditions.

Keeping the Legacy Alive for Future Generations

Food is an essential part of culture, and passing it down ensures that our heritage continues to thrive. By inspiring young minds to appreciate and preserve traditional flavors, Chef Li Li hopes to ignite a renewed passion for Malaysian kuih-making. After all, these delicacies are more than just sweet treats—they carry history, identity, and a sense of belonging.

Sarang Cookery is proud to play a role in keeping these traditions alive, and we look forward to hosting more cooking classes, cultural workshops, and special events to celebrate Malaysia’s diverse culinary landscape.

Stay tuned for more exciting culinary adventures at Sarang Cookery!
